Air curtain installation types
A key factor in the correct sizing and specification of an air curtain is the building situation. Depending on whether there is positive or negative pressure inside the building, two different air curtain installation types are used: IDW installation with an internally rotating air roll, or ADW installation with an externally rotating air roll.
Within these two installation types, different unit variants make it possible to achieve optimum separation for the specific building conditions.
Internally rotating air roll (IDW)
With IDW installation, air is drawn in from the room side and discharged directly above the door. This creates an air roll that rotates towards the room. IDW installation is generally the most energy-efficient air curtain installation type.
For pressure equilibrium or positive pressure in the building
For low to moderate wind loads
In enclosed rows of shops, wind-protected locations or entrances with a vestibule
Externally rotating air roll (ADW)
With ADW installation, the air intake is positioned above the door and the air discharge nozzle is located on the room side. This creates an air roll that rotates outwards, counteracting the incoming cold air. As a result, separation performance is significantly improved and air movement in the entrance area is reduced.
Because the intake area is exposed to lower temperatures, ADW installation requires a higher heating output than the IDW variant. A frost protection thermostat must also be provided.

Depending on the building situation and customer requirements, Teddington air curtains are available in a wide range of unit designs. These include visible wall or ceiling-mounted units, recessed ceiling installation with visible underside, systems with internally or externally rotating air rolls, units integrated into suspended ceilings and many other options.
Housing type S
Visible horizontal installation, air intake at the front.
Housing type U
For visible or suspended-ceiling installation, with the underside of the unit visible and air intake from below. Optionally available with a ceiling installation frame.
Housing type UDB
Recessed ceiling installation, flush with the ceiling, with air intake from below. The entire underside of the unit remains visible.
Housing type Z
Recessed ceiling installation with air intake from below. Only the air intake and air discharge openings are visible.
Housing type ZS
Suspended-ceiling installation with the air intake area inside the ceiling void. Only the air discharge opening is visible.

The combination of two air curtain units provides near-complete protection against the ingress of outside and cold air, while reducing thermal energy consumption by 30 to 40% compared with the conventional use of a single air curtain unit.
The optimum solution: vestibules with air curtain systems
At high-traffic building entrances, uncontrolled airflows are common. These are intensified by external wind pressure, thermal buoyancy and pressure changes caused by air-conditioning and ventilation systems inside the building.
Double-door systems are often used as vestibules, but they are only effective if the two doors close alternately. In practice, this effect is lost if door opening intervals are too long or the vestibule depth is too shallow. The result is that both doors remain open at the same time, causing unpleasant draughts and high operating costs due to substantial cold air ingress.
To maintain the function of a vestibule even when both doors are open, and to prevent cold air from entering the vestibule, Teddington offers an optimum solution using a combination of an ambient air curtain and a warm air curtain.
The ambient air roll at the outer door protects the entrance area against wind load and significantly reduces cold air ingress. The downstream warm air roll counteracts the remaining incoming air, conditions it and prevents unpleasant draughts. Together, the two air rolls provide first-class protection for the building.
